Aldosterone in Left Ventricular Hypertrophy among African-American Patients with
End-Stage Renal Disease on Hemodialysis, American Journal of Nephrology 2007;
27:159-163.
ABSTRACT: Recently, serum aldosterone levels have been reported to play a
significant role in cardiac hypertrophy. One study of Japanese patients
correlated aldosterone levels with the degree of left ventricular
hypertrophy (LVH) in those undergoing hemodialysis. However, the role
of aldosterone in LVH in non-Japanese patients with end-stage renal
disease (ESRD) has not been established.

with Once-Weekly Epoetin Alfa in Patients with Diabetes and Chronic Kidney
Disease, Endocrine
Practice, Vol. 12,
No. 5, pp. 506-513, September/October 2006.
ABSTRACT: The effectiveness of extended dosing of epoetin alfa beyond once-weekly (QW) has not been well explored in patients being treated for anaemia of chronic kidney disease (CKD). The current study was undertaken to assess the effectiveness of extended dosing in maintaining haemoglobin (Hb) levels in this population.

AIM: To determine whether extended epoetin alfa dosing schedules of up
to once every four weeks are as effective as weekly dosing in
maintaining hemoglobin (Hb) levels in patients with anemia of chronic
kidney disease (CKD).

Polyurethaneurea Arteriovenous Grafts, Nephrology News and
Issues, Vol. 19, No. 8 , pp. 44-47, July
2005.
BACKGROUND: Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) grafts often require
temporary catheters, which increase costs as well as risk of infection,
bleeding, and poor blood flow. Polyurethaneurea (PUU) grafts can be
cannulated within 24 hours of placement, avoiding the need for
temporary catheters.

Anemia of Chronic Kidney Disease, Clinical
Nephrology, Vol. 61, No 6, pp. 392-405, June
2004.
BACKGROUND AND AIM: Anemia occurs in approximately 47% of patients with
chronic kidney disease (CKD) not on dialysis. Recombinant human
erythropoietin (r-HuEPO, epoetin alfa) has been proven safe and
effective for anemia treatment in patients with CKD using a three
times-weekly regimen. The current study was conducted to evaluate the
clinical safety and efficacy of a less frequent dosing regimen (once
weekly) in this population.

Temple, M., Early Detection of Prostate Cancer in the ESRD Population, Clinical Nephrology, Vol. 61, No. 5, May
2004.
BACKGROUND: There are currently no prostate cancer screening guidelines
specific to the end-stage renal disease (ESRD) population. With this in
mind, we evaluated the clinical usefulness of digital rectal
examination (DRE), serum total prostate-specific antigen (PSA),
prostate-specific antigen density (PSAD) and transrectal ultrasound
(TRUS) in predicting prostate cancer in men with ESRD.

ABSTRACT: Several authors have advocated the use of multidisciplinary patient care teams to provide the most effective and efficient care for patients with CKD (Grady, Casde, & Sibley, 1996; Self et al., 1999). This article will review selected aspects of CKD management, describe the contributions of nephrology nurses practicing within a multidisciplinary CKD clinic, and discuss national CKD initiatives and educational materials that will assist nephrology nurses in caring for CKD patients.
